Mana Binz – World-Wine-Winning, Trilogy, 2011
The trilogy World-Wine-Winning consists of three works: “Bein’ Green”, “Bein’ Red” and “Wine Fusion”. Each of these individual works in turn consists two canvasses in the dimension of 190 x 33 cm. Material: Mixed media, including crushed glass, on canvass.
Mana Binz: “The triology pays homage to the culture of wine. It is a trilogy in more than one way, but surely also in the way in which the classical Christian altar consists of three pieces.”
Production of wine - enjoyment of wine - effects of wine. The colors play from yellow to green and then towards red; this mirrors the complexity of wine and the search for the ideal connection and balance between white wines and red wines. Both kinds of wine share the green of the vineyards, of the leafs, the color of nature. Both green and red play with the colors of earth, the blue of water and of the sky. Green and red share the glaring yellow of brilliant Riesling wines, the golden sun, the ochre of the earth, the grey of schist and the blue of Moselle reflecting the sky!
Green is the complementary color to red, the other color of the wine.
Thus my homage to the culture of wine will tell stories about the worlds that can be found in wine and it will bathe in the beauty of the colors, just as the wine flushes us with visions, touching as it does so many facets of human nature. Bein’ Human….
Everyone in the western world – and probably everyone in the entire world – knows the symbolic meaning of the colors green and red. Green means hope, red stands for love. Red, in its warmth and wonderful complexity is very much and easily used by artists whereas green is a complicated color. Green in the visual arts, that tells a story about the struggles of the artist with that color. Does the green have yellow reflexes? Does it have blue reflexes? One thing is certain: green has no pigments of red. Green is about compressing and converting colors. At the same time it is the green of our flora about which the proverbial “green thumb” of the best vintners can tell many stories.
Green is a difficult color? The undesirable green frog needs to be kissed, in order to make him into a beautiful prince. The vintner of the Moselle also has a difficult relationship with the green in his wine bottle: therefore, the picture tells the story of his permanent search to the true green for his bottle. This is evidenced by the following dialogue between a Moselle vintner and a producer of bottles: “That is my best wine! Brown? No, the bottle cannot be brown, because that would be Rheinhessen – but perhaps brown-green, or turtle-green or ferns green”. Before the green is after the green….
Yes, the search of the Moselle vineyards for the green in his wine bottle can be compared with the well-known search of the artist for the true blue!
Bein’ Green – that is green emotion – the idea, to make the green of the Moselle wine bottle the subject of this work came to me when I recently heard again the text and the music of Joe Raposo from the American TV series Sesame Street in 1970. The following is the text of the jazz version of Till Brönner:
